Mark Montalbán became a critical-care nurse

At the time of a 2010 profile in the Los Angeles Daily News, Ricardo Montalbán’s son Mark was a critical-care nurse who was working in procedural sedation in the colonoscopy unit of Kaiser Permanente Hospital in L.A.’s Woodland Hills neighborhood.

As a nurse, the young Montalban said patients – mostly older ones – will often look up from their hospital gurneys and recognize the famous last name on their nurse’s ID tag. And they mostly ask-“Montalban,” they will say. “You’re not related to Ricardo Montalban from `Fantasy Island,’ are you?”- “That’s my father“- he proudly answers them

Mark has been in the profession for more than 3 decades -“Dad had a lot of lean years as an actor. He wanted me to get a job where you get a steady paycheck every two weeks regardless of the economy,” Mark Montalbán explained to the newspaper. The son of the Fantasy Island actor volunteered for military service during Vietnam and was trained by the Army as an operating room surgical technician. He served two tours of duty and was there during the January 1968 Tet offensive per Los Angeles Daily News.

Ricardo Montalbán’s son Mark got a visit from his famous dad while serving. His father was on a handshake tour of Vietnam in 1969 with the USO and stopped at the hospital in Blockhouse base camp where Mark was serving. Mark also said he got his work ethic from Ricardo. “Any role Dad had, he immersed himself in,” he said. “I do that here. I don’t carry a beeper or cell phone because I don’t want to be distracted. I want my patients to know I’m totally here for them.”

Mark Montalbán’s parents met at a party in 1944, got married only days later, and stayed married till the death of her mother in 2007. Mark is also a married man. His wife is a nurse at Santa Monica/UCLA Medical Center, and the couple has two grown children. The family lives in Sherman Oaks.

Mark Montalbán’s mother died from an undisclosed cause on November 13, 2007. His father also died about a year and a half later January 14, 2009. Ricardo Montalbán died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 88 and the cause of his death was revealed to be congestive heart failure. Almost 10 years after his mother’s death, Victor Montalbán’s sister Laura Montalbán also passed away at the age of 72.
